Police arrested a suspect, allegedly preparing to flee the country, within 24 hours of discovering the brutal murder of a woman and her five children in the Eastern Cape.

The victim and her children, aged 6 months to 10 years, were allegedly beaten to death with an ax at their home in Dabekweni, Kwaaiman, on the eve of the 16 Days of Activism for Non-Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

“Investigators received information that led them to an apartment that allegedly belonged to a relative in Ginsberg, where they found and arrested the 32-year-old suspect who was in hiding,” said police spokesman Brig Tembinkosi Kinana.

“It is alleged that the suspect, who cannot be identified until his court appearance, had escaped from the town of Dabekweni in Kwaaiman after the incident to seek refuge in King William’s Town. Once charged, the suspect is expected to appear in Mqanduli magistrates court on Monday to face six counts of murder.
