Police arrested a suspect, allegedly preparing to flee the country, within 24 hours of the discovery of the brutal murder of a woman and her five children in the Eastern Cape.
The victim and her children, aged 6 months to 10 years, were allegedly beaten to death with an ax at their home in Dabekweni, Kwaaiman, on the eve of the 16 Days of Activism for Non-Violence Against Women and Children campaign.
“Investigators received information that led them to an apartment that allegedly belonged to a relative in Ginsberg, where they found and arrested the 32-year-old suspect who was in hiding,” said police spokesman Brig Tembinkosi Kinana.
“The suspect, who cannot be identified until his court appearance, is alleged to have escaped from the town of Dabekweni in Kwaaiman after the incident to seek refuge in King William’s Town. Details on how he got to Ginsberg are still under investigation. The suspect has not yet been interviewed by detectives to establish the truth behind the tragic ax killings … At the time of arrest, it is believed that the suspect was preparing to flee South Africa to his home country. “
Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga ordered the immediate activation of the 72-hour plan to arrest the suspect after the killings.
“I am really excited about this breakthrough in bringing in capable and competent detectives. His sleepless nights of research have paid off. The suspect must now face the law. Crimes against women and children are one of the top priorities of the South African Police Service, our communities must not only hear this, but must see its manifestations in the results of the work we do, ”said Ntshinga.
Once charged, the suspect is expected to appear in Mqanduli Magistrates Court on Monday to face six counts of murder.
