Pitso Mosimane’s glory in the CAF Champions League with Egyptian giant Al Ahly could strip SA of great coaches.
This is the opinion of former mentor Bafana Bafana Shakes Mashaba. The 70-year-old Soweto-born coach recommended that the country develop a larger pool of younger coaches who will take over as he predicts more African giants will come for the current seasoned coaches after seeing Mosimane working wonders in Al Ahly.
“I am very proud of Pitso. His success with Al Ahly has already created role models, ”Mashaba told Sowetan yesterday.
“More African clubs will want to import coaches from SA, but the danger with that is that we, as a country, will be left with nothing in terms of quality coaches.
“From now on we must increase the pool of future coaches… we need more coaches to take over if the ones we have go beyond our borders. Pitso has changed the game … it’s so amazing that he accomplished so much in a short time. ”
Mosimane, who joined Egyptian heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns in October, led the club to their ninth Champions League win by beating local rivals Zamalek 2-1 at Cairo International Stadium. It is Mosimane’s second Champions League trophy, having won his first with Downs in 2016.
“We are as lucky as SA to have this great man [Mosimane]. By accepting the job, he showed how brave he is. For me, I think he wins 5-0 [over Al Ahly in the same competition’s quarterfinals last year] by Sundowns was the game changer … it’s where Al Ahly realized he can be the man, ” Mashaba said.
However, Mashaba feels that it could be difficult for Mosimane to spread his wings further and train in Europe, hinting that racism remains an obstacle. “We all know that Pitso has what it takes to train in Europe, but I doubt it can work,” Mashaba said.
“Europeans still see Africans as inferior people. It is a very debatable topic, but we all know how European clubs see black coaches … much less those who come from Africa. ”
