Pitso Mosimane explains exactly why he left Sundowns and joined Al Ahly

“Yes, there were opportunities from the same team and other teams before, to be honest, but it wasn’t concrete like it was this year.

“This one, when people say we’ll send you the contract if you’re happy with it, it’s a totally different story to say, ‘You know the team has sent me, the team has given me a mandate to talk to you.’ You know those things, you never take them too seriously because anyone can say anything.

“But yes, you sign a contract and an opportunity comes and you feel like it’s a great opportunity in terms of the profile of the team, in terms of you as a coach who has never left the borders.

“And you need to get out of your comfort zone. And also say to yourself ‚’Look‚ you also need to show our local coaches that it is possible that one of us can go to train in the major leagues of the continent.’

“I want to say that this is like training Madrid or Barça in Europe. It’s like training Flamengo or Santos or River Plate or Boca Juniors in South America. It is as huge as that.

“So you say to yourself ‘Let me go there.’ Of course, you know the stakes are great in those big clubs and if you also look at the teams’ record then you won’t walk away easily because you will say ‘Hey, the coaches don’t last in that space.’

But I could say the same when I came to Mamelodi Sundowns. The useful life of a trainer did not exceed a year.

“And I said to myself: ‘Do you want to go to that environment?’ But look what came out. They dated for almost eight years ”.

Mosimane closed a hat-trick for the Sundowns a few weeks ago, including his fifth league title with the Brazilians, and the club’s 10th.

He won the Caf Champions League with Downs in 2016, beating Zamalek of Cairo in the final. He joins the Egyptian giants who have won a record eight Champions League titles.
