The South African forward could play in the Premier League earlier than expected after scoring four goals in Belgium this season.
Brighton & Hove Albion manager Graham Potter revealed that they plan to take Percy Tau to the Premier League in the January transfer window.
The 26-year-old is on his third loan period in Belgium, and has yet to play a competitive game for the Seagulls since leaving the Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018, initially due to work permit issues.
Tau had sent a ‘message’ to Potter from the 13 Belgian First Division A games with Anderlecht this season thus far.
He previously worked at Union Saint-Gilloise and Club Brugge before joining Vincent Kompany’s team on a one-season loan in the summer. Now Brighton is exploiting ways to shorten the loan deal and increase its attacking options with the South African international next month.
“It’s fair to say it’s something we’re looking to do, but there are some things to go through first,” Potter said. Sky sports.
“He brings some attributes that are interesting, he had a good experience in Belgium.
“He brings something a little different to what we have and he wants to take the next step in his career – we want to help him achieve it.”
While working on the return of Tau, Brighton & Hove Albion have been injured with Tariq Lamptey, of Ghanaian descent, excluded from Sunday’s Premier League trip to West Ham United.
The 20-year-old has played 11 league games for the Seagulls this span and Potter has downplayed the severity of the hamstring injury.
“It’s not serious, it’s just a little problem with his hamstring. The nature of how he plays, you have to be careful, you don’t want him to be out for several weeks,” he said.
“So I hope he comes back very soon. He is healing and recovering well.
“There is no other Tariq with the qualities and attributes that he has and that is the challenge for us to collectively find the solution.”
“We don’t have a similar substitute, so you have to adapt as a team and adapt so that someone else enters the team.”
