Two men were arrested Saturday shortly after attacking a taxi driver in Newton Park, who was strangled in the back while sitting in his car and then shot in the shoulder.

The suspects, ages 20 and 21, were arrested in a hospital after the failed robbery.

Police spokesman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the driver had shot one of the suspects during the confrontation at 7:45 pm.

“The 47-year-old driver went to an address on Alexander Road, Newton Park, to pick up a customer. When it stopped in the given direction, two men climbed into the back seat, “he said.

“One of the men tried to strangle him in the back with a piece of rope. The plaintiff fought back and the suspect shot through the seat and hit him in the shoulder. ”

She said the driver had responded to the fire and the suspects had fled.

“While busy at the scene, the police received information that two men were in the hospital with gunshot wounds.

“The suspects, one with a gunshot wound to the chest and the other with a gunshot wound to the arm, were arrested.”

She said both suspects were from Schauderville.

“They are expected to appear in court soon on charges of attempted robbery and attempted murder.”
