Patel under fire by DA for the clothing gazette ‘Alice in Wonderland’

The DA has compared new regulations on what clothes can be purchased during the national shutdown, signed by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Competition, Ebrahim Patel, to a list of “Alice in Wonderland”.

A government gazette dated Tuesday, May 12, listed items that can be sold, effective immediately, under level 4 of national regulations.

“These new clothing regulations are downright crazy and seem to be more in force during the 1980s under the Soviet Union than in a democracy like SA,” DA MP Dean Macpherson said in a statement.

“There is simply no justification for the minister to determine what clothing people can buy and, worse yet, how they should wear it.”

The party said that according to the regulations:

  • Buyers can buy shirts as long as they are promoted “to wear under coats and / or knitwear,” which was “insulting to South African intelligence”;
  • Buyers can only buy crop pants as long as they are worn with boots and leggings;
  • And finally, one could only buy “closed toe” shoes.

Macpherson said the clothing list was “reminiscent of how people were forced to live during East Germany’s existence.”

The party urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to fire Patel.

TimesLIVE previously reported that the list included all baby and toddler clothing and footwear, adult clothing and accessories, including shawls and scarves, hats, gloves, socks, belts, hats, gym and exercise clothing, and hair accessories .
