JOHANNESBURG – Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said on Friday that air travelers would have to keep their masks on for the entire trip unless there is an emergency or if the cabin crew instructs them to remove them.

Mbalula informed the media about the travel regulations under lockdown level 1.

The minister reiterated the president’s call for international travelers to present a COVID-19 test certificate.

The international travel ban was lifted on Thursday and South Africans were banned from traveling to and from high-risk countries.

Mbalula said children under the age of two can travel without a mask.

“This is because masks can restrict breathing in young children, as their airways are smaller than those of older children and adults. A passenger who is unable to wear a mask due to an underlying medical condition must present a medical certificate from a registered physician to the operator prior to departure, ”he said.
