CAPE TOWN – Parliament has found 16 EFF MPs guilty of misconduct for disturbing Public Enterprise Minister Pravin Gordhan last year.

On Friday, the powers and privileges committee investigating the incident heard final arguments from the initiator, defender Ncumisa Mayosi.

He said there was strong evidence against the deputies.

The guilty verdict against the EFF MPs comes after oral and video evidence was presented to the committee last month.

Grace Boroto, who chaired the session, also testified, saying she did not know what the EFF MPs’ intentions were, fearing they would attack Gordhan.

In her closing arguments, defender Ncumisa Mayosi told the committee that it had to proceed in the absence of the accused members, who were found guilty.

“On the balance of probabilities, the evidence before the committee proves all the charges against the affected members. The evidence before the committee has not been refuted. I submit that an appropriate case has been made to determine that each affected member violated the provisions of Section 7A, 7B and 7E of the Act and consequently each affected member is guilty of contempt of Parliament. “

The finding of guilt now means that the committee will have to deliberate before deciding on an appropriate punishment.
