JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) announced Monday that it had served Parktown Boys High School principal Malcolm Williams with a termination notice.
Parktown Boys pupil Enock Mpianzi (13) drowned in the Crocodile River at a shelter in the Northwest while at a school counseling camp earlier this year.
The GDE said Williams had been charged with three allegations of misconduct stemming from an incident that occurred on January 15, 2020 in which he unreasonably harmed the administration, discipline or efficiency of the Department.
“It is alleged that he undertook or caused the school to undertake a field trip to Nyathi Bush and River Break in the British for 8th grade orientation camp without prior approval.
“The second allegation is that they failed to ensure that an accurate list of all students who attended that field trip was kept.
“The final accusation is that he endangered the lives of students by ignoring a set of safety rules and regulations as set out in clause E of Security Measures, as he did not ensure that all students who were going in water activities they were provided with life jackets that led to the death of Enoch Mpianzi.
“It is extremely important to note that the director was found guilty of the first two charges and, subsequently, not guilty of the third. The President, after careful consideration of the extenuating and aggravating circumstances, dismissed him accordingly.
“Therefore, you have the right to appeal to the member of the Executive Council (MEC) against the conclusions of the president within five working days after receiving the notice of dismissal.”
