When Chinese auto giant Great Wall Motors (GWM) first unveiled its new one-ton bakkie to the world more than a year ago, we called it the “No Name Steed.” The company kept referring to her as the ‘truck’ and did not mention or give any indication of a name (or number, for that matter) they were considering for the bakkie they wanted to conquer the world with.
Why? We even mentioned the popular ballad “A Horse With No Name” by the folk band America to illustrate the point. Now, after 18 months in the nameless wilderness (although it was speculated that it might be called Cannon), the steed finally has a name: POER.
Yes, you read that right. POER (capitalized at least according to GWM’s announcement posted at the 2020 Auto China Expo in Beijing). So why POER and what does it mean?

Well, according to GWM, the name POER, now the official name of the P-Series truck, is the acronym for “powerful, off-road, nice and reliable.” Eish!
Also, according to the company, the word POER is inspired by the Chinese character Pao, which is apparently pronounced with a silent “r” at the end and close to the word “pou” (peacock) in Afrikaans. GWM also argues that it comes from the word power in its Middle English form.

The POER name will be used in international markets because, and I quote from the press release, GWM wants to build a vehicle “that is powerful, not only mechanically but also practically, that can go off the road; and smart connectivity makes the journey every time. nice and smart safety to make it reliable in extreme conditions. “
So there you have it: the GWM POER, the vehicle that will adopt holy nicknames like Hilux, Ranger, D-Max, Navara and Triton. It remains to be seen how buyers of wool-dyed bakkie will accept this name. Maybe keeping Series P or even Cannon would have been better.

At Auto China 2020, GWM also formally announced its transformation into a global mobility technology company and has initiated a series of significant strategic enhancements, including a revamped corporate culture, products, technology and marketing.
This also implies a revamped product line with leading technology in new models from its EV ORA brand, the third generation Haval H6, the POER pickup (including an EV version), the flagship Haval H9, as well as the Haval F7 and F7X. . The company also showed off a tough-looking, aggressive off-road version of the POER, complete with bulging wheel arches, rock sliders, and an integrated electric winch mounted on 33-inch tires.
Also ready for world premiere is the Haval Dagou (or Big Dog), an aspiring retro-styled Subaru Forester-like SUV based on GWM’s new LEMON platform. Interestingly, based on GWM’s concept of co-creation and ‘user development’, Big Dog’s name was chosen from a list of curious suggestions, such as Battle Ax, Wolf, and Reactor, received via online voting.
One can only hope that POER is not also a public vote …
