South African rugby fans came out in full force and requested 323 964 Tickets to attend all eight matches of next year’s tour British and Irish lions.
With the voting results to be emailed to registrants on Friday, SA Rugby confirmed that more than 260,000 users visited the official ticketing website in recent times.
“We would like to thank all of our local fans for the massive support showing interest in purchasing tickets to the British & Irish Lions tour next year,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby.
“The past few months have been challenging as we fight the Covid-19 pandemic, and it was heartwarming to see the interest of South Africans in experiencing a truly unique tour, which takes place only once every 12 years.
“As we expected, the interest in the three Trials was extremely high – they are subscribed two to three times – but we are sure that we will get as many people as possible into the stadiums.”
Roux reiterated that the ticket drawing will be conducted through a computerized selection process and that fans who have requested tickets may not receive everything they have requested, while the high demand for tickets means that applicants may not be successful at all.
“We also know that not everyone will take care of the tickets that are issued and there will be a resale phase later, so not necessarily all doors are closed,” he added.
“But we want to warn fans and discourage them from buying from illicit sellers, as those tickets cannot be guaranteed.”
