Over 3,000 Students, Staff Being Assessed Following COVID Outbreaks

JOHANNESBURG – Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande said on Friday that more than 3,000 students and staff were being screened and contacts were being traced after outbreaks of COVID-19 in some of the country’s institutions.

So far, more than 200 students have been assessed.

More than 55 students at the University of Pretoria tested positive for the virus and investigations into possible cases are underway at other TVET colleges and universities.

Nzimande said an agency mandated by his department to safeguard the health and well-being of students was working with staff to ensure that all COVID-19 disinfection protocols and measures are in place.

The minister of higher education has called on staff and students to remain vigilant as the 2021 academic year begins.

Spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi said: “The Health Department has developed detection stations around affected residents, mobile senior health units, institutional campus clinics, occupational health, employee teams are also stationed offering health and psychological assistance and welfare to affected residents ”.
