JOHANNESBURG – Hundreds of people took to the streets on Wednesday to express their outrage at the shooting at peaceful protesters in Nigeria.

Nigeria has faced mounting unrest as a protest of brutality by a police unit known as SARS turned into broader grievances against the government.

Witnesses said gunmen opened fire on a crowd of more than 1,000 in the main city of Lagos on Tuesday, and Amnesty International reported that several people were killed.

On Wednesday, protesters wearing the Nigerian national flag and chanting liberation slogans marched towards the Abuja embassy in Pretoria with banners reading “End Police Brutality.”

Another group of some 400 people in Cape Town, mostly Nigerian citizens, vowed to continue picketing until there is a change in Nigeria.

The well-known South African rap star AKA expressed his solidarity with the people of Nigeria and said: “How can people shoot to KILL their own compatriots?”

“This is insane … Send love and strength to Naija,” AKA tweeted to his 4.6 million followers.
