JOHANNESBURG – “He [Oscar Pistorius] it is where he finds himself through his own actions, and although he may have been an extraordinary human being, later in life I think he reached it all. “

These are the words of one of the many interviewed in the upcoming documentary _The Life and Trials of Oscar Pistorius _ESPN.

ESPN is set to release the four-part documentary series that will chronicle the rise and fall of the former sprinter.

Featuring interviews with more than a dozen of the figures closest to history, the film recounts Pistorius’s fall from grace after killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013.

She fired four shots through her bathroom door, an act she maintained was the result of mistaking her for a burglar.

The documentary recalls the beginning of the future Paralympic star’s life, chronicling his unlikely rise from a child who had both undeveloped legs amputated as a toddler, to the overnight adolescent phenomenon at the Paralympic Games from Athens 2004.

Breaking records and conventions, ‘The Blade Runner’ as it became known, then went on a quest to compete against non-disabled athletes at the Olympics.

His fight against international track and field officials continued for years before Pistorius finally prevailed and competed in the 2012 London Olympics. Less than a year later, he was in a South African court, charged with murdering his girlfriend.

The documentary is directed by BAFTA award winner Daniel Gordon and produced by Oscar winner John Battsek.

Gordon said he hopes the film will provide audiences with additional context and layers “to a story they think they know.”

“The Oscar Pistorius story is remarkable for its complexity. It is both inspiring and heartbreaking, and provides insight into a wide range of issues, from gender-based violence (GBV) to the rights of persons with disabilities, racial inequality, and the media frenzy. “

The documentary will be screened weekly from November 19 to December 10.
