In terms of experienced and proven Premier Soccer League (PSL) scorers, Sea Robbers’ current squad is apparently one or two light players.
After six seasons without a trophy, the Orlando Pirates will do everything possible to try to end that silver drought.
And they could get one step closer to that goal by beating Kaizer Chiefs in the second leg of the MTN8 semifinals at FNB Stadium on Sunday. With a 3-0 lead in the first leg, it would take a huge shock for that not to happen.
One problem the Bucs have, however, is injuries to Thembinkosi Lorch and Terrence Dzvukamanja, who were involved in goals and assists in last weekend’s win over the Chiefs.
Two of his other forwards, Tshegofatso Mabsasa and last season’s top scorer, Gabadinho Mhango, are already injured.
Of the 40 goals the team scored in the league last season, Mhango had 16, so it’s clear the Bucs depended and still depend heavily on him.
Of the other goal options, there is Zakhele Lepasa, who scored a great goal against Chiefs but is still young and untested.
There’s also offensive midfielder Vincent Pule, generally good for some goals, and Deon Hotto, although with 18 goals in 180 league games in South Africa, the Namibian is not prolific.
Central defender Thulani Hlatshwayo, another injury problem, will likely contribute some as well.
However, it seems the Bucs are leaning heavily on Mhango and are hoping players like Mabsasa, Lepasa and Dzvukamanja will reach their potential.
They look a bit short up front, and it makes us think of earlier speculation that the Pirates were interested in the services of SuperSport United shooter Bradley Grobler.
Grobler had his best goal comeback last season with 14 in the league. He may be 32 and it won’t be a long-term solution, but it would bring the Pirates a lot not only in terms of goals, but also in his heist game and his ability to draw others into the game.
Son of legendary Moroka Swallows shooter Lesley Grobler, you have to think that Bradley would like to crown a good career playing for one of the biggest clubs in South Africa and seems to be a perfect fit for the Pirates; you can wear it in black and white.
Other potential options, before the transfer window closes later this month, include Bongi Ntuli, though he recently reiterated his desire to stay at AmaZulu, and perhaps Phakamani Mahlambi, who is apparently set for a long handover period. by Mamelodi Sundowns.
However, it is not very likely that Sundowns will allow its player to join one of their direct rivals.
