Orlando Pirates star Thembinkosi Lorch He was arrested in the early hours of Monday following a case of domestic violence brought against him by his girlfriend.

Lorch, who completed the delayed 2019/20 Absa Premiership season in a biobubble with the Pirates on Saturday, appeared in court but was released on R2000 bail as confirmed by the NPA.

He is expected to return to court on October 8 while police continue to investigate.

The Orlando Pirates have issued a statement calling for the law to take its course after the incident.

“The Orlando Pirates Football Club is aware of an alleged incident involving Thembinkosi Lorch,” a statement read on the club’s website.

“This matter is currently in the hands of the authorities. As a club we cannot comment further, except to say that we condemn all forms of violence, especially violence against women and children. We support the rights of each and every person but we condemn forcefully violence.

“This country has witnessed some of the most appalling cases of gender-based violence and we do not take this matter lightly, however, we must respect the process undertaken by the authorities and allow the law to take its course,” the statement concluded. .

Last month, Lorch and his teammate Justin Shonga were removed from the Pirates team following a violation of team protocols when national soccer returned to South Africa after it was delayed in March as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Lorch was named South African Footballer of the Year in 2019.
