Things went from bad to worse for Cape Town when attacker Fagrie Lakay’s afternoon came to an abrupt halt after receiving a direct red card for a reckless tackle on Jooste in the 33rd minute.

Both teams pressed for one more goal before the half-time whistle, however it was not with Abubaker Mobara sending a free kick well over the mark from a decent position at the edge of the half.

Thulani Hlatshwayo thought he found a debut goal by the Orlando Pirates only to be penalized for pulling the jersey in the Cape Town area moments before firing a header home in the 48th minute.

Thabo Nodada came close to finding the equalizer in the 62nd minute with a powerful shot from outside the area, but his shot went over the bar.

Siphesihle Ndlovu forced Leeuwenburgh to make a good save before spoiling his follow-up effort with just 10 minutes left in the MTN8 clash.

Cape Town City almost found a late draw in injury time when Mobara hit a dangerous ball into the box, however Tashreeq Morris was unable to touch it from close range.

The Orlando Pirates managed to watch the remainder of the game to reserve their spot in the MTN8 semifinals as they posted a six-game winless run against their Cape opponents.
