CAPE TOWN – Eastern Cape health authorities say they were cautiously optimistic about a decline in COVID -19 infection rates.
The provincial health department reported a 31% week-over-week drop in new infections on Monday.
But more than 1,800 people are still in the hospital receiving treatment for COVID-19.
President Cyril Ramaphosa declared hotspots in the Nelson Mandela Bay and Sarah Baartman districts and put in place more restrictions to slow the spread of the virus.
Provincial health authorities say there has been a marked decline in new COVID-19 cases reported in hotspot areas.
Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha said: “The Nelson Mandela Bay and Sarah Baartman districts had a significant decrease in the number of new cases.”
Although it is an improvement, the province registered 1,276 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday.
Most of them are in Buffalo City Metro, Chris Hani and the OR Tambo district.
Nelson Mandela Bay, the fugitive access point until recently, accounts for just over 8% of the total.
Health officials are particularly concerned about the rise in the test positivity rate among health workers in metropolitan areas.
In total, more than 6,000 people in the Eastern Cape have died from the disease, while nearly 140,000 have recovered.
