Luxury sports cars owned by stylish businessman Edwin Sodi and his firm Blackhead Consulting have left the company’s Bryanston headquarters after being seized by the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU).
More than 25 vehicles are expected to be placed under lock and key, pending the outcome of the criminal prosecution of the businessman.
A Ferrari FF, valued at about R3 million, entered the property before AFU officials arrived Tuesday morning.
A Bentley Continental GT, valued at more than R3 million, was also seen leaving the commercial premises.
The cars and a variety of other assets were restricted by the AFU prior to Sodi’s arrest last week.
The anti-corruption unit obtained a provisional restraining order, which allowed it to seize assets, including luxury sports cars, and freeze bank accounts.
The NPA reported that assets and cash totaling R300 million had been frozen.
Sodi, the ousted Mangaung mayor, Sarah Mlamleli, the head of the Free State human settlements department Nthimotse Mokhesi, John Matlakala, Seal Radebe, Abel Manyeki and Thabane Zulu were brought before the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Friday.
They face more than 60 charges, including corruption, fraud and money laundering.
The seven have allegedly been linked to a multi-million dollar contaminated asbestos audit contract, promoted by the Free State Department of Human Settlements in 2014, which provided for an audit of 36,000 low-cost homes in the province.
Sipho Ngwema of the NPA said court appointed curators had taken over the files.
“The curators have been working at the commercial facility as well as the Bryanston property of Sodi. They have completed their work for the day,” he said.
