The suspected MDC Assembly hooligans, who illegally broke into the headquarters of the opposition party Morgan Tsvangirai on Sunday, allegedly abducted 12 of their rivals yesterday when factional infighting in the party nearly spilled onto the streets of Harare.

Alert police had to intervene swiftly to ensure peace and quiet prevailed in the capital, as warring factions threatened to take the law into their hands without regard for Covid-19 regulations and the rule of law. .

The occupation of the Morgan Tsvangirai House (also known as Harvest House) comes a few days after MDC A leader Nelson Chamisa, who violently took over the party’s presidency in 2018, threatened last Saturday with a radicalism not specified to reverse the will of the people as expressed in the 2018 harmonized elections.

In an interview, MDC general secretary, Mr. Douglas Mwonzora, who is a member of the Dr. Thokozani Khupe faction, accused Mr. Chamisa of sending his “hooligans” to provoke violent skirmishes.

“They have kidnapped people from our party and illegally occupied our headquarters, while I speak they have 12 people as hostages in the Casa de la Cosecha, we know they want to unleash riots and violence so that we are not going to please them, we have reported the kidnapping case to the police, ”Mwonzora said.

Due to the actions of the warring factions of the MDC, some roads in the CBD had to be closed, while the police had to prevent the factions from participating in street fights.

Police spokesman Deputy Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they had to deploy forces to ensure peace prevails after receiving information that there were machinations to cause violence by one of the factions.

“The ZRP maintained law and order in Harare CBD today after reports of alleged violence were reported at Harvest House. Basically, the police made sure that peace prevailed in the CBD, ”said Asst Comm Nyathi.

Although the MDC-A general secretary, Mr. Chalton Hwende, claimed that the young people who occupied Harvest House were not members of his party, Paul Gorekore, who claimed to be a member of the MDC-T youth assembly according to the party in conflict 2014 structures, said in a statement that they besieged the MDC headquarters to pave the way for future meetings between all party members, a situation that would benefit Chamisa.

“This act of courage was necessitated by the need to protect our beloved movement and the struggle of the people of Zimbabwe for a better life. As youth, we will continue to be guided by party organs, particularly the National Council, as we establish the will of MDC leaders, members, supporters, and Zimbabweans in general.

“… Furthermore, we urge the Republic of Zimbabwe Police to desist from interfering in the internal political affairs of the MDC and immediately vacate our headquarters. We also urge all young people to maintain discipline and peace while we await the meeting of the national executive of the party and the national council to chart the political path to follow, ”he said.

The history of the MDC is littered with examples of violence, splits and campaigns for the continued existence of illegal economic sanctions that Western nations imposed on Zimbabwe to remove the Revolutionary Party, Zanu PF, from power.
