On Monday, after her arrest and appearance in court, the SAPS sent her a letter notifying her of its intention to suspend her or temporarily transfer her in terms of police disciplinary regulations.
On Wednesday morning, the commissioner of the national police, General Khehla John Sitole, made the decision to officially suspend it as of October 15, 2020.
“The SAPS is suffering a serious injury in the form of corruption. But as we continue to clear our ranks, the scar will remind us that we should never be hurt like this again, “Sitole said.
On Tuesday, before Mgwenya learned of his suspension, Sitole sent a letter to all commissioners informing them that Mgwenya “will be out of office until further notice.”
Mgwenya, 56, a deputy commissioner of the national police, was arrested Monday morning.
She is the “15th defendant” in a case that also involves former acting national commissioner Khomotso Phahlane, and former Gauteng Deliwe de Lange provincial commissioner, among other generals and senior officers.
She faces corruption, fraud and money laundering charges for her alleged role in ensuring that the contract to supply emergency alert equipment for SAPS in 2017 went to Instrumentation for Traffic Law Enforcement (Pty) Ltd, while enjoying a close relationship not disclosed with the business owner. , according to the Directorate of Investigations of the NPA.
