JOHANNESBURG – A deadly boating accident on the Vaal River is now under investigation.

Five people drowned Saturday when the boat they were in sank near Spider Valley.

Two people survived and were rescued by the South African Maritime Safety Authority.

Police spokesman Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said the bodies of the victims were recovered near Sasolburg in the Free State.

“The seven passengers have already been counted and five deaths have been confirmed. The identities of the deceased cannot be revealed at this stage until their closest relatives have been informed.
