Omphile Ramela and Xolani Vonya have been banned from further activities and meetings of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) interim board, TimesLIVE can reveal.

The resolution was made by majority vote during a board meeting on Wednesday morning in the absence of the two members.

TimesLIVE understands that Ramela and Vonya have not been fully formally removed as directors, as there is a question mark as to whether the interim board has the authority to do so, but the decision simply prohibits the couple from participating in the work of the interim board. effective immediately.

Some of his colleagues, including retired judge Zak Yacoob, chairman of the board, view Ramela and Vonya as destructive figures who are holding the interim board back from executing its mandate.

The couple is also apparently being punished for communicating with the council of members, the highest decision-making body of the CSA, to report non-compliance with governance processes by some members of the board, including the presiding judge. Yacoob.

This also continues on Ramela’s heels, in a letter addressed to the CSA board of directors last week, calling for the removal of her partner Haroon Lorgat with immediate effect for “reckless” and “obstructive” conduct.

Ramela, who was president of the influential South African Cricketers Association (Saca) until last month, has said that Lorgat played a leading role in the “illegal” suspension of CSA company secretary Welsh Gwaza.

Ramela said Lorgat continues to improperly interfere with Gwaza’s suspension and that the former CEO has made the interim board dysfunctional.

“Therefore, I hereby humbly submit a request that Haroon Lorgat be removed from the Board with immediate effect,” Ramela implored her fellow CSA interim board of directors.

The CSA interim board was appointed and announced by Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa last month and directed the nine-member structure to restore the trust of the public and stakeholders in the administration of the game.

However, it is unclear if there are terms of reference to guide and monitor the work of the interim board.

TimesLIVE understands that Ramela and Vonya were asked to leave the meeting when the vote took place. Judge Yacoob, Haroon Lorgat, Judith February and Dr. Stavros Nicolaou voted in favor of the resolution to freeze the two members, according to sources.

Professor André Odendaal abstained, while Nkeko Mampuru and Andile Mbatha voted against the motion.

CSA’s acting board spokesman February did not respond to emailed questions to confirm the resolution. He also read the questions that were texted to him via WhatsApp, but again he did not respond.

CSA will brief the media and answer questions virtually in a scheduled telephone press conference that will also feature the board of directors, the council of senior decision-making members and the executive committee on Thursday morning.

TimesLIVE understands that the briefing is intended to provide clarity on the controversial suspension of the company’s secretary, Welsh Gwaza, and also communicate the banishment of Ramela and Vonya to the media and the public.

Gwaza was suspended last week, without a board resolution at the time, and his hearing is scheduled for next week on Monday, December 14.

TimesLIVE reported last week that a majority of CSA’s interim board members at the time rejected Gwaza’s suspension and that the increasingly divided body wanted strong action against the members who authorized his suspension.

It also emerged last week that not only was there no board resolution to suspend Gwaza, but there was also no resolution for the termination of a contract from any service provider.

“The interim board only managed to obtain a formal resolution for the suspension of the company secretary on Wednesday at the same meeting that resolved to sideline Ramela and Vonya,” said one of the sources who spoke to TimesLIVE.
