Ole Gunnar Solskjaer couldn’t resist a cheeky reference to José Mourinho after Manchester United had the wood to thank in their dramatic win over Brighton & Hove Albion.
United were completely outmatched for long stretches by Brighton, who hit the wood five times in the match.
However, after leading 2-1 but conceding the tie in added time, United secured victory in the most dramatic of circumstances with Bruno Fernandes’ penalty in the 100th minute.
Things could have been so different if Brighton hadn’t hit the wood so much and Solskjaer admitted it when he spoke to BT Sport.
The United manager also referenced the Mourinho incident earlier this week, when the Tottenham Hotspur manager revealed that he had swapped goal posts prior to his team’s Europa League tie with Shkendija.
Solskjaer said: “First of all you have to be happy that José is not here to measure the goalposts – it could have been a smaller goal!”
“They created too much for my liking, but it is a difficult team to face.
“We tried to push, they have very good players in the back who play very well, so we really didn’t get there.
“You can see we don’t have the legs and the sharpness yet, but we’ll get there.”
Mourino had noticed that the goal posts in Shkendija field were too short before the match and had caused UEFA to change the goals.

“Before the game it was a funny situation because my goalkeepers told me that the goal was small,” said Mourinho.
“I went alone and of course the goal was small. The goalkeepers spend hours and hours and hours in the goal so they know when the goal is not the right size.
“I am not a goalkeeper but I have known football since I was a child and I know when I stand there and open my arms and I know the distance, so I immediately felt that something was wrong.
“We got the UEFA delegate to confirm and yes it was 5cm smaller, which of course we required that the goals be replaced by goals of the correct dimension.”
