Internal Affairs officials who allegedly delivered notices to the Enlightened Christian Gathering church leader, the Prophet Bushiri and his wife Mary, were suspended, eNCA reported Sunday.
Bushiri and his wife are citizens of Malawi.
In addition to the charges against the pastor and his wife, which include fraud, money laundering and theft, they are also accused of violating certain provisions of the Immigration Law.
The Bushiri received three notices from a senior internal affairs official, in February and March of last year. The third notice was declared “irrational, illegal and invalid”.
According to a legal document, Bushiri’s application for permanent residence status was captured and granted by officials, “in terms of an incorrect section of the Act that occurred as a result of certain fees or commissions on the part of the applicant and his wife.” .
When the Bushiri received their third notice, they let the couple know that they needed to withdraw their residency status. They were given 30 days to present arguments to the department on why their permanent residence status should be allowed.
Internal Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi told eNCA that the officials were suspended for unrelated issues, but that their role within the Bushiri saga is now being investigated.
The church leader and his wife will request bail on Monday. Your application for bail is scheduled for October 30.
His money laundering and fraud charges are allegedly worth R102 million.
In Bushiti’s affidavit, he said he intended to plead not guilty and that he should be granted bail, as he said he had no reason to flee the country.
