DURBAN – MEMBERS of a multidisciplinary task force, which pounced on a suspected drug lord in Chatsworth on Friday morning, have been praised.

“We congratulate the multidisciplinary police working group, which comprises the KZN Anti-Gang Unit, the National Intervention Unit and the Durban Metropolitan Police, for this advance,” said Les Govender, provincial spokesperson for IFP KZN Social Development.

He added that the party has called for a declaration of war against drug lords and drugs in communities throughout the province.

In the early hours of Friday, officers went to a house on Train Road, where they made the arrests.

The defendant is wanted for murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

On the way to the police station, the defendant had to be taken to hospital after suffering a suspected heart attack. According to a police source close to the investigation, the accused will be charged in absentia.

Govender said it was about time the government showed the public that the war on drugs is a top priority and that no one is untouchable.

“We want a sensible approach towards drugs and towards those who bring them to the communities.

Lives have been destroyed and the social fabric of many communities has been destroyed by drugs. It is for this reason that the IFP asks members of the criminal justice system to show no mercy to drug traffickers. The courts must impose harsh punishment on all those involved in drug trafficking, ”he said.

Govender called for a multi-pronged approach to stopping the misery that drug addiction inflicts on our residents, there has to be a multi-pronged approach.

“We need to treat and support drug addicts and their families and, more importantly, prevent drugs from being readily available in our communities in the first place,” he said.
