Once off the beaten track, Dyonase would turn on his victim, accusing her of getting into the wrong taxi, demanding cell phones, money and bank cards. She then raped six women in this way.

“One of the victims begged him not to rape her in front of her son,” Ntabazilala said.

The prosecution had pleaded with the court not to be lenient towards Dyonase, arguing that he had carefully planned and executed his attacks. It would leave its victims stranded on the side of a road.

His victims had been traumatized by his ordeals. In their statements, some victims detailed how they now struggle to trust men and suffer from anxiety.

“One victim told the court that she would run every time she saw a man, jump out of a moving vehicle once the driver closed the doors, and jump every time a strange man looked at her or greeted her,” Ntabazalila said.

Dyonase had pleaded not guilty to the more than 20 charges against him.

Western Cape Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Yolisa Matakata welcomed his conviction.

“Communities in Cape Town, particularly women, will be safer with defendants serving a long sentence,” he said.
