The wife of one of the Cradock Four, Councilor Nyameka Goniwe, has died.

The tributes are reaching Goniwe, the spokesman for the Inxuba Yethemba Township in Cradock, who died after a brief illness.

Matthew Goniwe, Fort Calata, Sparrow Mkhonto and Sicelo Mhlauli, known as the Cradock Four, were brutally murdered near Port Elizabeth by members of the SA police security branch 34 years ago.

“The municipality is overwhelmed by deep sadness over the sudden passing of Cllr Nyameka Goniwe. His passing marks one of the most painful moments in our district. In fact, we are grateful to have been privileged to be a part of his life and words are not adequate to explain the loss of this gentle soul.

“On behalf of the Chris Hani District Municipality, we offer our deepest condolences and condolences to his sons Nobuzwe and Nyaniso and their dear family at this difficult time. We also express our deepest condolences to the community of the local municipality of Inxuba Yethemba with whom Cllr Goniwe has worked for so many years.

“We have lost a colleague, a friend, a great leader and a patriot whose life was dedicated to the betterment of others,” said Wongama Gela, mayor of the municipality.
