CAPE TOWN – The Minister of Labor and Employment, Thulas Nxesi, confirmed that he suspended the commissioner of the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), Teboho Maruping.

The decision was made because the Auditor General found evidence of irregularities in the spending of COVID-19 relief funds.

Nxesi unpacked findings related to the FIU COVID-19 Temporary Employer / Employee Relief Plan Wednesday afternoon.

Nxesi said the Auditor General’s report, released publicly on Wednesday, indicates serious risks and violations.

“In light of this and because this occurred during his tenure, this morning I suspended the commissioner of the FIU. I can see that some people decided to reveal this story even before I could announce it. “

Nxesi said he was named acting commissioner Marsha Bronkhorst, currently director of operations for the Department of Labor.

“Similarly, the DG of the Department of Labor and Employment has suspended the management of the FIU: the CFO, the COO and the head of the supply chain.”

Nxesi said he would not rest until every payment was accounted for and all wrongdoers were held responsible.
