So much for affordable next-gen PC gaming. Nvidia’s reveal of its new line of cards powered by Ampere got a lot of buzz this week. Not only was the technology on display better, more robust and housed in a gigantic aluminum slab, but the price was not bad at all. At $ 499 for a GPU that was on par with last year’s Nvidia flagships, now was as good a time as any to save some cash for hardware that would push any game setup to full speed.
While PC users were aware that there would be no direct change from Rand to Dollar for the final price, the RRP of these cards at least prepared consumers for what they would pay the minimum for. As a reminder, here are the US prices and how much they work, roughly:
- GeForce RTX 3070 – $ 499 (R8,314)
- GeForce RTX 3080 – $ 699 (R9,980)
- GeForce RTX 3090 – $ 1,499 (R24,977)
So once all other import taxes and costs have been applied for these cards, how much Really cost at the end of the day? Lots of laughs, if Evetech pricing is to be believed. While we’re still waiting to see if it’s placeholder pricing, Evetech pricing has currently resulted in a nationwide pandemic of ruined PC monitors due to everyone spitting out their morning caffeine when they saw how much the new ASUS and MSI RTX 3070, RTX The 3080 and RTX 3090 cards will cost.
At the bottom, you’ll pay R15,499 for an MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Ventus 2X 8GB, while the top of the list will cost you money from the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 for an ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3090 OC 24GB Gaming, at R46, 999. Roughly those prices and everything else is working to double the cost of what other markets will pay:

Maybe PC games it is expensive. I really hope these are reference prices and that sanity is restored. Alternatively, you can grab one of last year’s fantastic cards from the 2000 series, as long as you can find one. They all seem to have mysteriously disappeared …
