Two nurses at Witbank Hospital in Mpumalanga were suspended after the disappearance of a stillborn child at the facility last week.

The provincial health department said the nurses had not explained what had happened to the baby’s body.

Department spokesman Dumisani Malamule said the boy’s mother already knew she was going to deliver a stillborn baby when she headed to the theater for a C-section on December 11.

I was 35 weeks pregnant.

“The fetus was kept in the hospital for the weekend. On Monday, December 14, the woman and her family visited the hospital to request the burial of the fetus but could not be treated. They were told to return on Tuesday, but on their return they still could not be assisted. Instead, they were given the wrong body, ”Malamule said in a statement.

The provincial health department was alerted to the matter and has since suspended the two nurses.

The grieving family has opened a criminal case.

Health MEC Sasekani Manzini expressed shock at the incident.

“It is unacceptable that we can misplace a fetus and not be able to account for the whereabouts of the body. This matter must be investigated thoroughly and consequence management must be applied, ”he said.
