Nurse Practitioner Busi Ramafoko, who works in the resuscitation bay at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, said this New Year has been very different from previous years in terms of the number of patients she saw and the reasons why they are in the hospital.
The resuscitation bay is an emergency screening area for critically ill patients who need stabilization and resuscitation when they arrive for care. The bay is traditionally attached to the trauma unit of a hospital.
Ramafoko has been working on the ‘resus’ bay for nine years and has worked on both New Years Eve and New Years Day each year during that time. But he said 2021 was different than the other years he has worked.
Every New Year is busy at a hospital as large as Baragwanath, but this year the influx of patients was due to the coronavirus rather than the trauma of accidents associated with revelry, drinking and fireworks.
He thanked President Cyril Ramaphosa for the closure, which he said eased the burden on the hospital and gave health workers more ability to focus on the work at hand.
