Nuno Espirito Santo has been accused of misconduct by the Football Association for his criticism of referee Lee Mason.
In his post-game interview, Nuno said Mason didn’t have the “quality” to be a Premier League official after the Wolves’ 2-1 loss at Burnley.
The Wolves head coach later declined to apologize to Mason, saying, “I will apologize for my time. But I will not apologize for my words and my thoughts.”
A statement from the FA read: “Nuno Espirito Santo has been charged with a violation of FA Rule E3 in connection with his Premier League match against Burnley FC on Monday 21 December 2020.
“Comments made by the head coach during a post-match interview are alleged to constitute inappropriate conduct, as they were personally offensive to the match referee and / or discredited the game against FA Rule E3.1 .
“Nuno Espirito Santo has until Tuesday, January 5, 2021 to respond to the accusation.”
Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood found the net when Burnley won 2-1 at Turf Moor on December 21.
After the Wolves’ flat performance, Nuno decided to vent his frustration at Mason’s direction, questioning whether the referee is up to the job of refereeing the Premier League.
He said Sky sports: “Honestly I don’t like to say it, but I have to say it because I won’t feel good: the referee doesn’t have the quality to whistle a match in the Premier League.
“This is an issue we knew about. We had Lee Mason before. It’s not about the crucial mistakes or the decisions, it’s about the way he runs the game.
“Players get nervous. Too many voices. He whistles from voices when some players yell. He doesn’t have [it]. We are talking about the best competition and it is clear that it does not have the quality to whistle the game.
“I’m very disappointed to say this, really disappointed to say it, but I wouldn’t feel good if I didn’t say it. It happened before.”
