A Northern Cape mother is expected to appear before Britain’s Magistrates Court on Friday after being charged with the murder of her newborn baby who was found in a shallow grave.

The 29-year-old woman is alleged to have given birth a week ago at her home in Sunway, Rietfontein, Hartbeesportdam.

“The suspect is alleged to have placed the newborn baby in boiling water, then wrapped it in plastic and buried it in a shallow grave in a nearby field.

“The mother then confided the incident to her friend, who alerted the police,” said police spokeswoman Lt. Col. Amanda Funani.

The police thanked her friend for raising the alarm.

“The Northwest Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Seal Kwena, applauded the suspect’s friend for speaking and working with the police to ensure that the suspect was arrested for this heinous crime.

“In addition, he said that community members should continue to cooperate with the police to ensure the protection of the most vulnerable in society,” Funani said.
