The Clicks Group confirmed on Tuesday the resignation of non-executive director Nonkululeko Gobodo for “personal reasons”.
His resignation was effective as of Monday.
“We would like to thank Nonku for his valuable insights and contribution to the board and risk and audit committee over the past three years, and we wish him every success in his present and future endeavors,” said President David Nurek.
Gobodo’s resignation comes nearly a week after he told Sowetan that he should have followed up on questions he asked Clicks executives about his plans to properly communicate with black clients.
“My daughter had educated me on brands that didn’t understand their black customers, so with this knowledge I would ask executives, ‘How do you talk to your black customers?’” Gobodo told the publication.
The clicks came under fierce scrutiny for a racist TRESemmé ad for hair care that sparked EFF protests in stores across the country.
Since then, the company has apologized and in an agreement with the EFF promised to recall TRESemmé products and replace them with local products.
Clicks also pledged to award scholarships for pharmaceutical studies to black students.
