There is no further investigation to be done on the December 1 Powerball drawing that resulted in the winning combination of 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, says the National Lottery Commission (NLC).
The regulator confirmed to Business Insider South Africa on Thursday that it now considers all good with that result.
Rather than investigate the staggering sequence of numbers, the NLC recommended that operator Ithuba launch an educational campaign on how numbers are drawn, amid “public scrutiny.”
Sequential number picking has made headlines around the world, mostly due to the fact that it yielded 20 winners, despite predictions that people wouldn’t bet on that outcome.

The NLC said it had received a report on the Ithuba draw and emphasized that every part of the number drawing process, from design to execution, is subject to testing and audits.
However, South Africans have not been persuaded, with some threatening lawsuits of the details of the draw winners to see who benefited.
The auditors have a reputational aspect to the game, although the Lottery Commission is in the room.
Auditing lottery draws and convincing a sometimes skeptical audience of their random nature is important, says everyone involved in the process. That is why independent auditors participate.
During Powerball draws, such as draw 1151, that is clear at all times.
But the integrity of the giveaway is ultimately the responsibility of the NLC, and its officials are also involved alongside those auditors, the commission says, with responsibilities including making sure the correct random number generator is used and the correct results are published.
“The NLC remains committed to ensuring that the National Lottery is conducted with due ownership and that the interests of the National Lottery participants are adequately protected,” he said this week.
The sequential numbers were not drawn in that order, but seeing how it happens shows that the draw is false.
The results of the lottery draw are presented in numerical order, so the official result of the strange draw is presented as 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. But the numbers were not drawn in sequence. The actual result, in the order the numbers were selected during the “live” drawing, was 8, 5, 9, 7, 6, and 10.
While that may make the outcome seem a bit less unlikely, watching the replay of the draw live doesn’t necessarily build confidence, because the draw is fake. Although visually presented as the result of a ball machine, the draw broadcast uses computer-generated graphics, as it has done since September 2017, when “outdated” ball machines were replaced by automatic random number generators (RNG ).
Nor is the “live” draw really live; the numbers are actually selected 30 minutes before the broadcast, as soon as ticket sales close, says the lottery operator.
The random number generator is tested periodically, says the NLC.
