JOHANNESBURG – Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) president Kebby Maphatsoe has defended retired SANDF general Maomela “Mojo” Motau after he enraged the military chief, General Solly Shoke, and several veterans of the MK.
In an unprecedented move, Shoke issued a press release warning SANDF members not to attend meetings to discuss African National Congress (ANC) issues.
Some also described Mojo’s strictly ANC cadre summit as a recipe for a coup. But Maphatsoe said the former general’s meeting had nothing to do with trying to overthrow the government.
Maphatsoe took advantage of a meeting with ANC officials to defend Mojo’s case.
He said there was never a plan to overthrow the state.
“Mojo didn’t plan a coup and he never had that idea,” Maphatsoe said.
The president of MKMVA accused those who made such claims of liars.
“But people, because they are panicking or because they are afraid of Mojo, bring these charges,” he said.
Motau had yet to meet with officials to deliver a dossier on the party’s problems and possible solutions.
