A small Nigerian air force passenger plane crashed outside Abuja airport due to an engine failure on Sunday, killing all seven people on board, the air force said.

“First responders are at the scene. Unfortunately, all 7 personnel on board were killed in the accident,” said air force spokesman Ibikunle Daramole in a statement.

The Beechcraft KingAir B350i plane crashed while returning to Abuja airport after reporting an engine failure en route to Minna, it said. The city of Minna is located about 110 kilometers northwest of Abuja.

In the bushes just outside the airport’s perimeter, dozens of military and airport officials searched the charred remains of the plane.

Fire trucks and ambulances were waiting. The smell of burning chemicals lingered in the air, but no fire or smoke was visible, a Reuters witness said.
