  • Vice President David Mabuza is scheduled to answer questions in the National Assembly on Thursday.
  • The National Assembly will debate the attacks on farms on Tuesday.
  • The city of Cape Town, which previously refused, is scheduled to appear before the Police Portfolio Committee.

Vice President David Mabuza is due to return to Parliament on Thursday to close what is probably the shortest term in history.

He is scheduled to answer questions at the National Council of Provinces (NCOP). Two weeks earlier, he had a similar engagement in the National Assembly, but this had to be postponed due to illness.

His previous scheduled question session at NCOP in July was also canceled for this reason.

On Tuesday, the NCOP will host a virtual briefing from the Minister of Small Business Development, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, on the progress made in accelerating small business development.

The National Assembly will hold a hybrid plenary session on Tuesday and will debate “an urgent matter of national public importance, with the theme: The recent scourge of attacks on farms and murders of farmers and agricultural workers.” DA MP Diane Kohler Barnard sponsored the debate.

On Wednesday, the social services cluster made up of the ministers of basic education, health, higher education, science and technology, human settlements, water and sanitation, social development and sports, art and culture will answer questions in the National Assembly.

At Thursday’s session of the National Assembly, the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, will make a ministerial statement on the transformation of the heritage landscape in South Africa.

In total, 54 parliamentary committee meetings will take place this week, including the following, according to a statement from Parliament.

Notable among these is the planned meeting of the Police Portfolio Committee with the City of Cape Town on the incident that involved City law enforcement officers evicting a naked man in Khayelitsha on Friday.

This after committee chairman Tine Joemat-Pettersson had to summon the City to appear before him after he declined the initial invitation.

Also on Friday, the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will receive a progress report from the National Tax Authority (NPA) and the Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigations (DPCI) on matters related to VBS.

This will end probably the shortest term: three weeks.

The previous period was extended to deal with Covid-19 related matters, with only a two-week break taken before the start of the third period. Parliament will stand from September 7 to October 5. It will go up by the end of the year at the end of November.
