It has been a difficult few weeks for the country following the assassination of chief police officer Charl Kinnear and the assassination of farm manager Brendin Horner.

And chaotic and violent scenes unfolded outside Senekal Magistrates Court earlier this week when a small group of farmers broke into the building in an apparent attempt to gain access to Horner’s suspected killers. A police van also overturned and set fire.

This “anarchy” was condemned by Police Minister Bheki Cele, who said he could not understand the logic of the violence directed at his men in blue when they managed to secure arrests.

Many questions have been raised about the ability of the police to curb agricultural violence.

Some argued that Cele was in fact against the farmers. However, there is no concrete evidence that he said, “Farmers shouldn’t complain when they get hurt.”

On the Kinnear front, the police are also at the center of various accusations that allude to the involvement of officers in the underworld.

This as people despair over the criminal situation in South Africa, with ruthless and blatant crimes making headlines almost every day.

In an exclusive offer, Cele will chat with News24 Editor-in-Chief Adriaan Basson at 08:00 on Friday.

You can watch the event live on YouTube here.

Basson said he looked forward to a solid interaction with Cele on matters of urgent public concern.

“Crime affects us all. It destroys lives, livelihoods and communities. The minister needs to explain to the country what he will do to restore law and order.”
