Ed Woodward Transfer Extract

Ed Woodward has admitted that high-spending days are a thing of the past because of the coronavirus crisis.

“No one should be under any illusion about the scale of challenges everyone faces in soccer,” Woodward said.

“It may not be ‘business as usual’ for any club, including us, on the transfer market this summer.

“As always, our priority is team success, but we need visibility of the impact across the industry, including transfer window deadlines and the broader financial picture, before we can talk about a return to normality.

“On this basis, I can’t help but feel that speculations about individual player transfers of hundreds of millions of pounds this summer seem to ignore the realities facing the sport.

“It is also important to recognize the role played by our successful business in allowing us to fulfill our social responsibilities.

“We have always believed that our business model is more resilient to us than most clubs and we are grateful for the continued support of our business partners to help us do it.”
