CAPE TOWN – Rising COVID-19 cases, a drought, service provision, and eradicating corruption are some of Nqaba Bhanga’s main focuses.

The newly elected mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay outlined his restructuring strategy for Eastern Cape City on Saturday.

Bhanga was elected during a marathon council meeting on Friday night, which was marred by various postponements and drama.

“It will not be easy. What we built in 2016, they destroyed everything. They have destroyed our city. We have to fix that. Today we are worse off than before, with even more daunting challenges to face, but we are ready. We will not shy away from our commitment. ”

Bhanga said he believed he had a lot of work ahead of him and that his restructuring strategy would be implemented in the coming weeks.

The first item on his agenda was to launch a public awareness campaign to ensure that the public and businesses are complying with COVID-19 health and safety regulations.

It will also be key to assess the current financial status of the city and implement a drought mitigation plan.

“We have not reached day zero, we have reached daily incompetence due to the incompetence of the political leadership in handling the water crisis.”

The new mayor made it clear that he will ensure that housing and service delivery needs are met.
