A woman died of coronavirus a few days after giving birth without being able to hold her newborn child.

Fozia Hanif began developing symptoms and tested positive for the disease just before her 29th birthday, resulting in the premature birth of her son, Ayaan, earlier this month.

Just six days after giving birth, Hanif’s family received the devastating news that she would not recover and that her fan would be turned off.

The probation service worker was only able to see her newborn son in a photograph printed for her by nurses at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, and her family described it as a “happy” moment.

“She was very happy, she received the photo of the baby printed by (the nurses),” her husband of almost seven years, Wajid Ali, told ITV News.

“She was hugging and said” look, it’s our baby “and” we’re going to come home soon “… that was the last time I spoke to her.

Her sister Sophie Hanif said she would receive text messages telling her how excited she was to finally meet her baby.

“She was texting us saying ‘oh, I haven’t seen the baby yet’ and I said ‘don’t worry about it, when you come home you will come home together and we will all see it together.’,” She said.

Initially, Hanif, who gave birth to her son on April 2, showed some signs of overcoming the illness and was taken to a recovery room, but soon after her condition worsened and she was transferred to an intensive care unit (ICU ).

Hanif had been going to the hospital for check-ups during her pregnancy, when she developed a mild fever in March and the hospital staff decided to keep her there for tests. She tested positive for coronavirus, but was soon released at home and was able to celebrate her birthday with her family.

However, while she was at home, her condition began to deteriorate rapidly and she was taken back to the hospital, isolated from her family and put on a respirator.

Her husband said: “They said we will keep her here to find out and that we will do a Covid test and they kept her for two days.”

“The test was positive and the next day they said it was mild and that you can go home. After four days she had difficulty breathing and we called the ambulance. “

After being informed that she had developed a blood clot and was in a coma, her husband and father, Nabil, were allowed to visit her wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).

At one stage, the family was told that her condition was improving and that they would take her to the recovery room.

Her father said: “He gave us adequate hope, we were excited. They took her to the recovery room, gave her the phone, we actually talked to her.

“When we entered the hospital when they said they were going to turn off the machines, I said no, do not turn it off until we get there, she is a fighter, it can happen, but when we entered there, she just kept on praying.”

Hanif died on April 8, six days after her son Ayaan was born just 31 weeks after her cesarean pregnancy. Although Ayaan has tested negative, he remains in the hospital.

Her sister added: “I had no time at all.

“He was asking for food, he was asking about the baby, he was asking about the family and suddenly … It was a shock for all of us.”
