South Africa’s best-selling SUV, the Toyota Fortuner, underwent a facelift, bringing the price up to seven variants.
The design team focused on retaining Fortuner’s signature profile while accentuating and refreshing the facade. Up front, a larger, darkened grille with a wavy mesh pattern is accompanied by a silver-accented “skid plate” for a more rugged, integrated look, he said.
“The redesigned bi-LED headlights provide a sleeker look and are enhanced by the prominent chrome accent strips that link the grille and headlamp assemblies.”
The Japanese automaker noted that the most significant changes are “under the skin,” where new and revised engine components result in notable gains in production with sizable cuts in fuel consumption.
The most powerful 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine now produces 150 kW of power between 3,000-3,400 r / min and 500 Nm of torque between 1,600-2,800 r / min. 2.8-liter models are available exclusively with a six-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission.
The 2.4-liter engine develops 110 kW of power at 3,400 r / min and 400 Nm of torque between 1,600-2,000 r / min, available in a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
Toyota said all models will benefit from a new Variable Flow Control (VFC) power steering pump that improves fuel economy and provides a more natural driving feel that varies with driving conditions.
A high level of assistance is offered at low speeds (parking maneuvers) while lower levels of assistance are offered at higher cruising speeds, in order to improve steering feel. A specific mode for low-range off-road driving has also been included, he said.
Protection and security
Making its debut at Fortuner is the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) safety system.
TSS integrates a pre-collision system, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition to give drivers additional peace of mind, Toyota said.
“TSS joins the existing range of airbags, ISOFIX, seat belt pretensioners and a full suite of active safety aids (ABS, EBD, brake assist, VSC, trailer sway control, traction control). As before, the 4 × 4 models also include Downhill Assist Control (DAC).
“It includes a comprehensive anti-theft system, speed-dependent automatic door locking and keyless entry across the board,” said Toyota.
Toyota Connect
All models are also equipped with the Toyota Connect telematics system, which includes an in-car WiFi access point and 15 GB of complimentary data.
“Once linked to their profile, customers can manage their vehicle through the MyToyota app,” Toyota said.
“This intuitive app enables on-demand service reservations, vehicle information and history, tracking data, as well as Toyota Connect data top-up services and much more, and lately it even includes the ability to renew your vehicle’s license online. “.
Infotainment
The Fortuner also features a new 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.
This allows users to duplicate their mobile phone applications for seamless connectivity.
Navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze are included natively and occupants can also access their music libraries and streaming accounts through apps like Apple Music, JOOX, Spotify, and SoundCloud.
Wireless telephony is supported via Bluetooth with a USB input for additional media options. The 2.8 GD-6 (mid and VX) models are also equipped with built-in Audio Visual Navigation (AVN).
Prices
All Fortuner models come with a 3 year / 100,000 km warranty. All models come with a 9 service / 90,000 km service plan as standard: 10,000 km or 12 month service intervals.
Customers can also purchase extended service plans and warranty packages through their Toyota dealer.
The SUV sports an all-new front bumper and grille, and comes in seven variants priced at R566,800, with the top-of-the-range priced at R790,500.

A total of seven exterior colors are offered, with Oxide Bronze joining the color palette (replacing Avant Garde Bronze). Glacier White, Chromium Silver, Graphite Gray and Attitude Black provide the neutral tones, while Cosmic Blue and Chestnut Brown remain the most expressive tones on offer.
