JOHANNESBURG – The story of Siphamandla Wiseman Ndabezitha, the gasoline wizard who wowed South Africans, just got better.
Nedbank, the bank that Ndabezitha uses, has announced that it will match all donations made to it by the end of Thursday.
The 38-year-old’s story went viral Tuesday after a video of him circulated widely on Twitter.
In the video, which was secretly filmed by an unidentified man, a confused Ndabezitha is seen holding two R10 notes given to him by the customer.
The attendant had poured R210’s worth of gasoline into the tank after the customer had asked for it. However, the customer turns and says that he had asked him to serve “two ten.” [rand notes] of gasoline, amounting to R20. The client left, leaving behind a bewildered Ndabezitha.
After seeing the humiliating experience on Twitter, South Africans offered to donate money to him.
Nedbank stepped in and made the offer on 702‘s Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa Show on Thursday morning.
Talking to Eyewitness news, Nedbank said the promise is a gesture to make a difference both as individuals and as corporations.
“Nedbank executive Buli Ndlovu was listening to the Bongani Show in 702 this morning, and was moved by the discussion about how the gasoline assistant, Wiseman, was humiliated and the subsequent support of the South Africans. This prompted Nedbank to commit to match the contributions made by the end of today, September 10, ”Ndlovu said.
