The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo arrested 496 people in the province on New Year’s Eve for violating level 3 lockdown regulations.

The offenses included not wearing masks, not adhering to curfew, and drinking in public.

According to the police spokesman, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, others were arrested for using fireworks in prohibited places and for dispensing and transporting alcohol.

“Although the people of Limpopo were very compliant during the crossing, these arrests are a manifestation that law enforcement officials were relentless in enforcing these regulations,” Mojapelo said.

He added that operations will continue throughout the period of the blockade.
