After delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, voters will cast their votes for the by-elections on Wednesday.

The Electoral Commission (IEC) has 609,133 registered voters in the census, 23,008 of whom applied for and were approved to cast special votes. The IEC said 12,218 will vote through home visits and 10,790 will go to the polling stations.

Elections will be held in 95 districts across the country.

‘Independent candidates are the future’

Maimane said Tuesday night that South Africans must start toppling political parties by voting for independent candidates. He said that the parties lack accountability and transparency.

“We believe that independent candidates are the future of governance in South Africa. The election of people who are not imposed by any political party strengthens accountability, brings decision-making closer to the people and ensures that the most suitable people for the purpose represent us in government, ”he said.

Maimane, who launched his movement earlier this year after resigning from the prosecution at the end of last year, said that political parties protect members implicated in crimes.

He said that the future of South Africa should not depend on any political party.

He urged voters to be open to considering ordinary members of their communities for government positions.
