JOHANNESBURG – The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) has reportedly agreed that a 10 p.m. curfew should be imposed at hotspots.
News24 reports that the council has also decided to restrict the sale of alcohol to four days a week, while taverns and bars should close at 9 p.m.
The council met Tuesday to discuss the latest increases in COVID-19 in South Africa and how best to curb the spread of the virus in the holiday season.

Prime Minister Alan Winde said Tuesday during Wednesday’s consultation that he would argue strongly against any forceful instrument, such as a blockade, imposed on the province.
He said that provincial and local governments were considering their own interventions and localized restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19 in accordance with their respective powers.
“The Western Cape is against the blockade being imposed on the provinces and is in favor of specific and local interventions based on scientific evidence.”

Winde said that one of the interventions, which was necessary, was around the meetings, and especially those that take place inside.
The number of people who are allowed to gather inside is currently 250; Winde said this was too high and should be reconsidered for specific critical points.

He said another challenge was limited law enforcement resources, as the province redirects law enforcement teams to enforce regulations while crime continues.
“We would also like to see more manpower sent to local hotspots, in this case we need to use law enforcement and this is where the national government can help with the deployment of additional police resources.”
