National shutdown planned by Magashule supporters: report

Supporters of ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule and former President Jacob Zuma are planning a series of nationwide closures across the country to protest Magashule’s decision to resign.

City Press reported that the closures will coincide with the 30-day period that the ANC’s national executive committee has given Magashule to resign from office or face disciplinary action.

The NEC adopted the ‘step aside rule’ last weekend, which stipulates that all members facing charges of corruption or other serious crimes must withdraw, otherwise they must be suspended.

The rule affects politically embattled Magashule, who is currently out on bail of 200,000 rand. He faces corruption charges related to the Free State asbestos project.

The newspaper said that among the demands of the sympathizers is that the “ANC withdraw the president of the country and his cabinet.”

He said that the circulars that are being distributed demand the interruption of key points, the blocking of national highways and all access roads to and from shopping centers.

The circular also called on progressive political parties and NGOs, among others, to join the #CRMMustFall shutdown.

The Sunday Times reported that Magashule plans to tell party leaders that he will be removed from office to clear the way for the re-election of ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is expected to seek a second term next year.

Sources close to Magashule said that he is going to argue that the step aside rule, in terms of which he must vacate office by the end of April, is being implemented “selectively” to attack him and Ramaphosa’s other opponents, despite the fact that many ANC leaders face allegations of wrongdoing.
